Trauma and PTSD
Definition and Symptoms
Trauma is an emotional response to a terrible event like an accident, rape, or natural disaster. Immediately after the event, shock and denial are typical. Longer term reactions include unpredictable emotions, flashbacks, strained relationships, and even physical symptoms like headaches or nausea.
Treatment
Treatment may include cognitive and additional specialized therapies, as well as medication. Hospitalization may be necessary. Three main psychological therapies used to treat PTSD are: cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT),
Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), and support and advice.
