Obesity
Definition and Symptoms
Obesity is a chronic, complex disease with several causes that lead to excess body fat, which in turn can lead to poor health. Obesity is commonly defined as having too much body mass. A BMI of 30 or higher is the usual benchmark for obesity in adults. A BMI of 40 or higher is considered severe (formerly “morbid”) obesity. Childhood obesity is measured against growth charts.
Treatment
Treatment plans are often gradual and vary with each individual. It often involves dietary changes and increased activity. Counseling or therapy may be incorporated as well, and medication may be prescribed. Surgical intervention may be approved for those who meet certain criteria.
